Brief Description

The Market-Driven Waste Diversion Mechanism (Residuals and Recyclables Diversion Project) was funded by the Coca Cola Foundation to create a waste diversion mechanism for residual plastics and recyclables. These plastics usually end in the oceans. The success metric for this project is that residual plastics are diverted at a rate of 4 tonnes/day for a span of 3 months on top of the current residual plastics being diverted. It was initially supposed to last for 6 months, but due to the pandemic and the limitations imposed on movement, the target goals were not met, it was initially extended to December 2021, but we are looking for another extension as pandemic restrictions are now more relaxed compared to last year. The project involves the barangays, the municipal government (specifically, the MENRO), wastepickers, and CEMEX. The barangays collect plastic residuals through its residents. These are baled and collected by the MENRO and stored at residuals containment area (RCA) before they are collected by CEMEX and used as refuse derived fuel (RDF). The persons collecting the waste residuals are paid 4 pesos per kg as an incentive.
